I have struggled a lot to write the best resumé to attract the employers for the my dream job. I have made many resumés and cover letters and sent to all the places. However, no one called me to come for an interview. Here are tips and tricks that helped me to build a resumé.

Create a professional email Address

The use of an unprofessional email address will get you rejected 76% of the time.

Make sure to spell it correctly on your resumé.

Create a targeted Resumé

It’s ok have several version of your resumé and expected. Cut and expand your information to fit the industry and employer.

Format ; There are 3 formats to choose for to build your resumé.

Chronological Resumé

The chronological resume format focuses on work experience. It is organized by dates, from past to present.

Functional Resumé

The skills-based resume format is organized according to your skills. In this format, you experience and education are secondary.

Combination Resumé

The hybrid/combination resumé format highlights both you experience and skills, linking the skills in the skills summary to real-life experience that shows how you gained them.

A strong resumé goes beyond listing jobs….

Do not lie on your resumé!

Summary

It’s three sentences of who you are, where you are going, and why you will bring value to the company.

Employers value the skills that you developed regardless of where.

This includes skills developed in school, volunteering, extra curricular activities and in paid employment.

Describing your experience

  1. Paint a clear and accurate picture of your role on the job
  2. List your responsibilities and contributions
  3. Use bullets to make descriptions easy to read
  4. Use strong action words
  5. Provide context
  6. Think about what your were praised for and what you were most proud of on the job
  7. Add number and details where possible

If you have space add hobbies and interests, It can be great addition to your to your resumé.

Companies are beginning to emphasize work culture. Which makes finding a candidate with a fitting personality increasingly important.

Action Verbs

Actions verbs are words that expresses an action. In a resumé, action verbs are used to highlight your skills, experience and accomplishments. They are specific, clarify your contributions and bring a confident tone to your resumé.

Before: ”Held Weekly status meeting to share client updates”

After: ” Spearheaded weekly status meeting to communicate agency revenue growth”

Here are some basics to design your resumé

  • 1-2 pages
  • Choose an attractive and readable font
  • Font size between 10-12 pts
  • Make strategic use of bold, caps, italics
  • Arrange contents to best reflect your experience

Make good use of the top third of your resumé

When recruiter scans your resumé, they will focus on the top third of the document. Think of the top third of your resume as ”penthouse.” It’s here that you want your best skills, experience, and achievements to appear.

Your resumé is a branding opportunity

  • Use graphic design best pictures
  • Include social media and website links such as Linkedin
  • Save as Word, PDF
